Scratched-Off CVV or Missing Digits? — Step-by-Step Recovery

The three-digit CVV is protected by a foil strip that scratches away easily. If you’ve rubbed it into oblivion—or worse, you were sold a card with fewer than 16 digits—don’t toss the plastic. Follow these steps to get a free replacement or manual override.

Fast Checklist

  1. Keep the receipt. It proves activation and shows the last four digits.
  2. Photograph front & back—even if damaged. Clear images speed replacement.
  3. Freeze the card via IVR (option 2) so no one else can guess the CVV.
  4. Open a replacement case by calling 1-800-544-2943 → option 4. Provide the last four digits, load amount, and purchase date.
  5. Email photos & receipt to the address they provide (auto-reply will issue a case ID).

Timeline

  • Digital e-card: under 24 hours.
  • Physical replacement: USPS First Class, 5–7 business days.

Emergency In-Store Work-Around

If your local Target cashier is willing, they can manually key the 16-digit card number plus expiration. You’ll need MyBalanceNow open on your phone to read the full number.
